AI Max for Search

What it means, how it works, a worked example, common mistakes and how to monitor it, with official sources.

Definition
AI Max for Search is a set of Google Ads features that extends a Search campaign's matching, ad text and landing pages beyond its keywords and written assets.

In plain words

AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a switch inside a Search campaign that lets Google find more searches than the keyword list covers, adapt the ad text and choose landing pages on the site.

It also brings brand and location controls to the campaign.

Why it matters for brand and paid search teams

Broader matching means an advertiser can appear on more searches it never listed, including brand searches, unless it uses brand controls. That makes it even less reliable to guess a competitor's keywords from what you observe.

Generated text can also include wording the advertiser did not write word for word, which matters when reviewing claims or brand mentions in ads.

How it works

Google describes the components: search term matching, which extends reach with broad match and keywordless technology; text customization, which generates ad text from the advertiser's ads, landing pages and assets; and final URL expansion, which sends people to the most relevant page of the site.

It adds brand controls at campaign and ad group level, to include or exclude brands, and locations of interest at ad group level. Reporting adds a source column that shows whether a match came from broad match expansion or keywordless matching.

Google has said Dynamic Search Ads campaigns will be upgraded to AI Max starting in February 2027.

Example

Summit Outdoors (summit-outdoors.example) turns on AI Max in its hiking boots campaign. Within days, its ads appear on northstar trail boots in Denver, with a generated headline that mentions trail boots and a landing page Summit Outdoors never chose as a final URL.

Northstar sees a known competitor on new brand searches. The observation cannot show that AI Max was the cause; that is visible only in Summit Outdoors' reports.

Fictional brands and domains, for illustration only.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

How to monitor it in Ads Lighthouse

Ads Lighthouse records each ad as shown, with the search, place, device and time, so ads that reach your brand searches through broader matching appear in your reports like any others. Brand names in generated text are highlighted.

It cannot tell whether an ad came from AI Max, and it cannot see an advertiser's brand controls.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI Max make my brand searches more crowded?

It can, because advertisers using it may reach more related searches. Brand exclusions let them avoid specific brands. Monitoring shows what actually happens on your searches.

How do I check what AI Max matched in my own account?

Google's search terms reporting for AI Max includes a source column that shows whether a match came from broad match expansion or keywordless matching.

Will Dynamic Search Ads still exist?

Google says DSA campaigns will be upgraded to AI Max starting in February 2027. Check its help pages for the latest timing.
