Click identifier

A plain definition, the context behind it, what Ads Lighthouse can and cannot observe, and the official sources.

Definition
A click identifier is a parameter such as gclid that an ad platform adds to a landing page URL to connect a visit with the ad click.

Google's auto-tagging adds the Google Click Identifier to the URL when someone clicks an ad. Other platforms use their own identifiers, such as msclkid for Microsoft Advertising.

An identifier in a captured URL shows how the destination was tagged; it does not identify a person.

How Ads Lighthouse observes it

When a destination URL contains click identifiers, the ad details view lists them separately from UTM values and other parameters.
