Redirect chain

A plain definition, the context behind it, what Ads Lighthouse can and cannot observe, and the official sources.

Definition
A redirect chain is the sequence of addresses a click passes through, such as tracking or network links, before reaching the final page.

Advertisers and affiliate networks use redirects to measure clicks. With parallel tracking, Google sends people directly to the final URL while measurement happens in the background.

Each hop can reveal who was involved, but a chain can also change by time, location or device, so any trace is itself an observation.

How Ads Lighthouse observes it

Redirect-chain tracing is not available in Ads Lighthouse. It saves the destination URL written in the ad and shows the parameters in it; hops that are not in that URL are not shown.
