- Definition
- Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that serves ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single goal-based campaign.
In plain words
Performance Max lets an advertiser give Google its goals, budget and creative materials, and let Google decide where and when to show ads across its channels.
On search results, its ads can look like normal text ads or Shopping listings. Nothing on the page says which campaign type produced them.
Why it matters for brand and paid search teams
Performance Max can reach brand searches, including the advertiser's own brand, unless controls are set. PPC teams worry about it taking credit for brand traffic that a Search campaign would have caught more cheaply.
For monitoring, it means ads on a brand search may come from a campaign with no keyword list at all, which makes "which keyword did they buy" an even less useful question.
How it works
Google describes Performance Max as a goal-based campaign type that accesses all Google Ads inventory from one campaign. Advertisers provide asset groups (text, images, logos, videos) and can guide it with search themes, brand exclusions and negative keywords.
Google states that Search campaigns with an exact match keyword identical to the search are prioritized over Performance Max; phrase and broad match keywords have the same priority as search themes.
Brand exclusions in Performance Max apply to Search and Shopping ads, and Google lets advertisers allow Shopping ads to keep serving on excluded brand terms.
Example
Summit Outdoors (summit-outdoors.example) launches a Performance Max campaign for hiking gear. Within a week, a Summit Outdoors text ad and two of its product listings appear on Northstar's brand searches in Denver and Atlanta.
Northstar sees a new pattern from a known competitor. Whether it comes from Performance Max, a Search campaign or both is not visible from the page.
Fictional brands and domains, for illustration only.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
Performance Max only shows on YouTube and Display. It also reaches Search and Shopping inventory, including brand searches.
Performance Max always beats my brand Search campaign. Google prioritizes Search campaigns with an identical exact match keyword. Other cases follow its prioritization rules.
Brand exclusions remove all brand traffic. Shopping ads can be allowed to continue on excluded brands. Check the setting.
How to monitor it in Ads Lighthouse
Ads Lighthouse records the text ads and, on the Growth plan and above, the Shopping listings that appear on your monitored searches, whatever campaign type produced them. It cannot tell which campaign type served an ad.
For your own account, compare monitoring with your campaign reports to check whether Performance Max is showing on your brand searches, and use brand exclusions if it should not.
Frequently asked questions
Can Performance Max show ads on my own brand searches?
Yes, unless you apply brand exclusions or other controls. Google documents how brand exclusions work for Performance Max.
Can I tell if a competitor uses Performance Max?
Not from the results page. Campaign types are visible only inside the advertiser's account.
Does Performance Max use keywords?
It does not use a keyword list like Search campaigns. It uses signals such as asset groups and search themes, with negative keywords and brand exclusions as controls.
