- Ad strength is a Google Ads rating, from Incomplete to Excellent, of how well a responsive search ad's assets fit the keywords it targets.
In plain words
When an advertiser writes a responsive search ad, Google gives it an Ad strength label: Incomplete, Poor, Average, Good or Excellent.
It is advice about the ad's building blocks, such as having enough distinct headlines that relate to the keywords.
Why it matters for brand and paid search teams
PPC teams use it as a checklist while writing brand and competitor ads. It is easy to over-trust, though: a rating inside the account does not decide whether the ad shows or where.
For monitoring teams, it is a reminder that what reaches the results page depends on the auction and on which combinations the platform chooses, not on the rating an advertiser sees.
How it works
Google says Ad strength evaluates the relationship between the assets you provide and the keywords you target, the number of distinct headline and description combinations, and whether you have enough sitelinks. The rating updates when keywords, assets or account structure change.
Google states that the Ad strength rating does not directly influence an ad's serving eligibility. Pinning headlines, for example, can lower the rating because it reduces the combinations Google can test.
Ad strength is shown only in the advertiser's own account.
Google presents it as feedback for improving ads. It does not replace testing: two ads with the same rating can perform very differently on brand searches, where the searcher's intent is already clear and a plain, accurate message often works best.
Example
Northstar's brand ad for northstar.example is rated Average because five of its headlines repeat "Northstar boots". The PPC team rewrites them to cover returns, free shipping and the new trail collection, and the rating moves to Good.
In the following weeks, monitoring shows a wider variety of Northstar headlines on its brand searches, which is what the team intended.

Common mistakes and misconceptions
Excellent ad strength guarantees the top position. Google says the rating does not directly affect serving. Ad Rank decides whether and where the ad shows.
Ad strength is the same as Quality Score. Ad strength rates a responsive ad's assets. Quality Score is a keyword-level diagnostic. Neither is the auction itself.
Pinning is always wrong. Pinning lowers the rating but can be needed for required wording. It is a trade-off.
How to monitor it in Ads Lighthouse
Ads Lighthouse does not see Ad strength, for your ads or anyone else's. It records the headline and description shown on each monitored search, which lets you check how your rewritten brand ads actually appear across places and devices.
Use the Keywords report to compare your own ad's appearances with competitors' on the same searches.
Frequently asked questions
Does Ad strength affect my ad's ranking?
Google says the rating does not directly influence serving eligibility. It is feedback to help you write better ads.
Which ads get an Ad strength rating?
Responsive search ads, among other responsive formats. The rating is shown in the advertiser's account while writing and reviewing ads.
Should brand ads aim for Excellent?
A better rating usually means more distinct, relevant headlines, which is useful. But required wording, such as legal lines, may need pinning and a lower rating. Judge brand ads on results too.
